Payroll involves calculating the correct amount of pay owed to your employees.
Payroll is possible one of the most significant side of operating a business. You have to have employees to perform certain tasks, and these employees have to be paid. Payroll involves calculating the correct amount of pay owed to your employees. This can be either hourly wages for non-exempted employees or a salary wage for a certain calendar period for your exempted employees, or perhaps you have salespersons who work on commission, as well require reimbursements for travel or job related expenses. You also have to calculate additional pay such as vacation time and accrued sick leave. All of these are considered part of the employee's gross pay, which is the total sum of all taxable wages paid to an employee. From the gross pay, various deductions are made including income tax. Other possible deductions may include state tax, social security, supplemental health insurance, union dues, pension plan contributions. The net pay the employee's receives is the remaining amount after all deductions have been made from the gross pay, the word net means ultimate. If any employee has his or her net pay direct deposited, then the employee could receive a pay stub indicating this. Often employers are required to pay government taxes, including unemployment insurance. Employers may also pay into such benefits as a pension plan such as 401(k), where they match employee contributions, employer portion or all of employee health insurance, as well as additional expenses, including educational reimbursements. The majority of employers use either payroll computer programs or outsource their payroll to payroll services, because of the threat of heavy government-mandated penalties for improper or inadequate collection of payroll taxes and wage payment.
