Choosing the correct accounting software for your small business does not have to be a difficult task. The first step in selecting the right software is to define your needs. We all expect our accounting software to do more than just bookkeeping. This is especially true since most of the newest packages are loaded with hundreds, of sophisticated solutions that are fully capable of running a multitude of business processes. Because each software product contains its own unique set of solutions, many have a difficult time trying to match the product's solutions to their needs. Before you start searching for the right software, you have to a complete understanding of your business's operations, and how the software is will handle such responsibilities as payroll, banking, managing employees' work hours. It is both expensive and time consuming for you and your staff to install a new accounting method. Therefore, it is best to discover the product will not meet your needs, prior to installing the software. Accounting software is divided into the following four groups: 1) Entry-level software: for small businesses with up to 20 employees. 2) Small to medium business software: for companies with no more than 100 employees. 3) Small to medium enterprise software: for organizations with 500 employees. 4) Enterprise resource planning software: for organizations with more than 500 employees. For multifaceted businesses, you should select a software product one step above your market. However, if your business functions are simple, then you may be able to select software one step below your market. Through software that from a lower category is less expensive, it also contains fewer features. Using software with limited capability may cause you to have to integrate other software programs to perform the required accounting tasks you require.
